50 Book Challenge Vol. II
So last year was an epic failure on my part with only 29 books read. That's about to change! Here's my second go at the 50 book challenge!

[info]50bookchallenge is a little community that challenges it's members to read fifty books in a single year. I thought I'd try it out again and see how it went! Besides reading fifty books this year, I'm also trying to read at least fifteen thousand pages.

My Book Listing! )

All titles behind the cut come with summaries, a few thoughts I have about the novels I choose to read, a page number and a rating out of five. Check out my list, see if anything sounds interesting! If you've read anything I've listed, please feel free to comment on it and we can discuss it all!

Progress! )

I Wheel, You Heal
I watched Bringing Out the Dead last night and LOVED it. Such an amazing movie. I hope I never get as jaded as Nic Cage's character, though. Still, Nic Cage is now officially God, and that's not just because he played a medic. Teehee.

Some of the movie was a tad cheesy, some was overkill, but for the most part it hit the nail on the head. A lot of the things Nic Cage's character, Frank Pierce, says, are true. Things like these:

Frank: Saving someone's life is like falling in love. The best drug in the world. For days, sometimes weeks afterwards, you walk the streets, making infinite whatever you see. Once, for a few weeks, I couldn't feel the earth - everything I touched became lighter. Horns played in my shoes. Flowers fell from my pockets. You wonder if you've become immortal, as if you've saved your own life as well. God has passed through you. Why deny it, that for a moment there - why deny that for a moment there, God was you?

Frank: I realized that my training was useful in less than ten percent of the calls, and saving lives was rarer than that. After a while, I grew to understand that my role was less about saving lives than about bearing witness. I was a grief mop. It was enough that I simply turned up.

I highly reccommend the movie to those who have not yet seen it. Fabulous. Heartbreaking, and so real.

Two thumbs up. Hands down one of the best films I've ever seen.

Movie Recs
I was watching a movie today and decided to put a top 10 movie rec list up here in my journal for you all to enjoy. Who knows, you might like the movies too! If you've seen any movies you think I might like, post them here!

Now, without further ado, here's the list (in no particular order).

Ladder 49

This movie hits really close to home for me. I'm not a firefighter (yet) but I can understand the camaraderie and sense of family that the firefighters experience. I never particularly liked Joaquin Phoenix, but this movie changed that. It was brilliantly done, extremely realistic and a phenomenal tribute to the brave men that risk their lives each and every day to save those of others. I cried like. A. Baby. But in a good way. Beautiful movie.

Dracula Dead and Loving it

Let's face it. Leslie Neilsen owns. This movie is hilarious, witty and brilliant. A great twist on the Dracula stories. I always end up in tears from laughing so hard. It's the perfect movie to watch on a Friday or Saturday evening when you feel like you need a laugh.

Phantom of the Opera

Though it's got nothing on the actual stage production, it's very well done. The costumes are fantastic, the sets are beautiful and the music is amazing. I didn't picture Emmy Rossum as Christine Daae, but Gerard Butler makes a perfect Phantom. This one actually converted me to an opera/musical fan. Amazing movie!

Something's Gotta Give

Best romantic comedy since As Good As It Gets. It's witty, funny and sweet. It's a more mature type of humor than a lot of the movies out there and isn't cheesy like a lot of romantic comedies. Plus it's got Keanu Reeves. 'Nuf said.

The Holiday

Yes, it's a complete and utter chick flick, but it's amazing. Jack Black is phenomenal, and the rest of the cast follows closely behind. It's both heartbreaking and heartwarming at times, with the latter winning out in the end. Just don't watch it immediately following a break up.

National Lampoons Van Wilder - Rise of Taj

This is one of those stupid comedies that I never thought I'd find funny. Turns out it's hilarious and though slightly disturbing in it's naughtiness at times, it's great. The perfect movie for when you just need to laugh without thinking about what you're watching.

Interview with the Vampire

As much as I despise both Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, they did phenomenally well in this movie. It's chilling but absolutely brilliant. I wasn't particularly thrilled with the novel, Rice's style just doesn't do it for me, but the movie was pretty cool. That and you've got Antonio Banderas as Armand. He does a wicked job.

Take the Lead

In continuing with the Antonio Banderas theme, I have to say I love this movie. I'm not usually one for the dance type movies, but this one was pretty great. I loved Banderas' character in the film and I loved the passion. I highly recommend this one.

Fracture

Best movie I have seen in a long time. It was chilling, suspenseful and made me think. It was a real mindfuck. The story was brilliant and though not perfect, it was believable enough to be great. Ryan Gosling did a very good job alongside Anthony Hopkins. Wicked movie.

Jurassic Park

The book and the movie are completely different, but that's alright. They're both brilliant. If you treat them as separate entities, the movie is awesome. I love the cast, I love the effects and I love the science. The action is great and it's suspenseful enough to hold your interest. Great piece of work!

Blood Clots and Black Holes
To celebrate the fact that I'm going to the Thrice concert in February, here are the lyrics to my favorite Thrice song ever. I hope they play it. It's one of their older ones, but definitely one of the best.

I highly reccommend downloading it! If you can't download it, let me know and I'll send it to you or I can post a link. :)

Ode to a Paramedic
This one's for all of the EMRs, EMTs and paramedics out there. I don't know who the author is, I don't know where it came from, but it's amazing. It sums up all of what we as medics have to do and have to be able to handle. It hits home so close that it's scary. It's a beautifully written account of what we as medics have to be and have to go through each and every day. It brings tears to my eyes every time I read it.

WINNER!
I realize it's not Thursday night yet, but I figure everyone who was going to vote on my journal title has already voted, so I'm going to change the name now. That and I won't be home later this evening to change it then, so now works.

Also? I've decided to make this a monthly contest. Just because!

Announcing the winning title for my LJ for this month...

17.It's not so pleasant...
...and it's not so conventional

Works for me!

Thank you to everyone who voted and tune in next month for the next round of Name Julia's LJ!

Title Poll Update!
I changed my layout again! I can't help it, I like the tag list in the sidebar on this layout better. It's much cleaner.

Now then.

I've added another several titles to the list of possibilities for what I want to name my LJ! It's what I get for listening to music too much.

Anyways.

For those of you who have already voted, feel free to vote again! I feel as though I should mention something I forgot to mention in the last entry. Since there are SO many choices for the title and I know it's tough to pick one, you can all pick THREE titles you like. I'll take the most popular title tomorrow evening and that's what my new LJ title shall be!

So go forth and vote, or vote again!

You can find the list HERE.

Stuff!
For lack of a better title...

So I just got my IHAS practicum dates! September 13th to the 16th. Should be tons of fun!

Anyway, that's not the point of this entry. The point is that I need to come up with a new title for my LJ. Or not. It's up to you guys! I've come up with a list of things I could possibly title my journal (most of them very medic-y, since I'm all about my career these days, the rest are lyrics) and I need YOU guys to vote for which one I should change it to.

For the love of God, please vote and make this easy on me! )

Blah.
I'm sick again.

My nose is stuffy, my throat hurts like hell, I can't stop coughing, I have a nice fever and my lungs are all junky. Part of me is still hoping it's just a bad cold. Hopefully the shitload of stuff that's in the meds I'm taking to fight the symptoms will keep me sane while I recover.

In other news, I changed my layout again. I like this one and I must say, [info]grrliz is amazing at the whole designing layouts thing. Much love.

Cancer - The Cutie

Most amazing kisser. Very high appeal. Love is one of a kind. Very romantic. Most caring person you will ever meet! Entirely creative. Extremely random and proud of it. Freak. Spontaneous. Great at telling stories. Not a fighter, but will knock your lights out if it comes down to it. Someone you should hold on to.

That sounds a lot like me. It's scary how much it sounds like me. Anyone agree it sounds like me?
